Using a substantial piece of raw material for a seemingly modest purpose like a tea-light candle holder might initially appear extravagant. However, the decision was driven by a desire to preserve the remarkable relief found on the top part of the wood. Had this piece been transformed into a bowl, the unique topography of its surface would have been lost, a compromise I was not willing to make.
The top section of the piece remains unadorned, its natural beauty unaltered by finishes. This choice not only highlights the wood's intrinsic aesthetic but also maintains its authentic texture. In contrast, the sides of the piece underwent a transformation through turning, and were subsequently treated with Tung Oil. This finishing process was thoughtfully chosen to protect the wood while allowing the full spectrum of its colors and patterns to shine through. The gradual evolution of these hues and designs during the turning and sanding process was a delightful revelation.
The final outcome is a piece that captivates the eye, its beauty lying not just in its appearance but also in its utility. The tea-light candle holder stands as a testament to the idea that functionality and aesthetic appeal can coexist harmoniously, each aspect enhancing the other to create an object that is both visually enchanting and practically useful.
