Hollow-Form Vase

English Yew

100mm tall and 300mm in diameter across the widest part

Retained in my personal collection

#041

No. 3 of 4 pieces from the same Yew Tree log

This piece marks my initial foray into crafting a bowl with a pronounced undercut, a design characterized by a relatively narrow opening, thus embodying the essence of a true hollow-form. The log from which this was turned featured an undulating, irregular outline, posing considerable challenges in devising a design that would yield a smooth, refined exterior surface. To accomplish this, I resorted to the use of resin. However, due to the stunning colour variations commonly found in Yew, the black resin subtly blends into the background. The final product is a piece of exceptional beauty, its swirling patterns of pink, black, and ochre conjuring up images reminiscent of celestial formations.
