Tamboti firmly ranks within my top five favored woods, appreciated for its balance of qualities. It has a dense grain, which, interestingly, doesn't translate to excessive hardness. This characteristic makes Tamboti a pleasure to work with, allowing for a smooth finish with minimal need for oil or wax treatments. In my recent project, I sanded the wood to a 600-grit smoothness, opting for a simple Tung Oil coating to enhance its natural, rustic appearance.
The wood comes from the same family as those used for producing sandalwood fragrance. During the turning process, the workshop air is pleasantly filled with Tamboti's subtle, fragrant aroma, adding an enjoyable sensory dimension to the experience.
An intriguing aspect of Tamboti is its toxicity in raw form, adding a cautious excitement to the crafting process. This factor makes working with Tamboti uniquely stimulating, as it requires careful handling unlike most other woods.
