I typically consult an online wood species database before embarking on a project with an unfamiliar species. On this occasion, however, I neglected to do so and paid a steep price. According to The Wood Database, this particular wood can be among the most irritating and inflaming to mucous membranes, necessitating caution whenever airborne sawdust is generated.
Indeed, I endured 24 hours of severe hayfever-like symptoms. The wood produces a powder-like dust during turning and even more so during sanding. I had to resort to using a surgical mask in addition to my active powered respirator during the sanding process.
Despite these challenges, the end result was well worth it. The design, though accidental, proved serendipitous, particularly considering the unusual grain pattern presented on the wide, flat surface. The piece was sanded to a 1500 grit finish and treated with food-safe Tung oil, enhancing its natural allure. This experience served as a potent reminder of the importance of thorough research and preparation in the craft of woodturning.
