Sapele is generally considered to be an alternative to Mahogany, It has no distinctive grain or characteristic features and I had not given it much attention prior to selecting it for a quick practice turn. I was therefore genuinely surprised at how well this turned out. It is quite soft and very forgiving which allowed me to retain a near knife's edge finish on the outer rim. This was finished with hard wax which also brought out the rich colour and ensures a durable finish.
